So I am an Indie Game Dev. I make horror games. Which games inspired me? What do I think are the top 5 horror games? Read on.

Remember these are my opinions yours may be different.

Number 5 – Quake 4

Some may not call this a horror game but the storyline definitely qualifies. You play the part of a soldier who basically becomes an alien hybrid. Every level is low light and full of monsters. This was my first experience with a horror game. I loved every heart-stopping minute. The reason this comes in at number 5 for me is that while it was definitely horror. It was still mainly an FPS game. When I think true honest to goodness horror games I think jump scares and paranormal stuff. Still Quake 4 really got my curiosity up for more horror games.

Number 4 – Granny

Ok, now we are getting into the nitty-gritty of true horror. Granny is probably one of the most popular horror games in recent years. It went from a small mobile-only game to a much bigger and better mobile game and even launched on steam. My son was the first to introduce me to this game and I had a blast trying to avoid granny while escaping. I even decided to do a run-through on my gaming channel Single P Gamer

Granny comes in at number 4 mainly because I couldn’t decide between it and the other three. I would have liked granny better with higher graphics quality but that is just me. If granny looked less like a paper cutout and more realistic it would add to the immersion for me. All-in-all though it is easy to see why Granny is so popular.

Number 3 – The Subject

An indie horror game that feels like a AAA title. The Subject was created by Dark Stone Digital. This is one of those games that makes you think. It is a puzzle game where you are being chased by a monster. Now in newer patches, you can actually choose to have the creature present or not but I like the suspense of not knowing. I haven’t had a chance to play it all the through way yet. However, it is really fun and I am sure I’ll get through it soon. Anyway, I did a part 1 video on this game on my main channel. I’ll embed it below so you can check it out. I was a bit funny in this one.

I loved playing this game. When life permits I am going to get back in and finish it.

Number 2 – Layers of Fear 2

OMG! This is one of the scariest games I have ever played. It has it all. A great storyline, Puzzles, massive jumpscares, and a spooky environment that keeps you on the edge of your seat. It is a sequel to my number 1 pick which was even better than this one. Layers of Fear 2 is one of the few games that really made my heart pound. The sound design and storyline were awesome, and the visuals were top-notch.

I definitely recommend anyone who is a fan of horror games play this one. You will love it!

Number 1 – Layers of Fear

This game definitely gets the top spot. Layers of Fear scared me. That is saying something because I don’t scare easily. The intense immersion made me feel like I was actually there. Which was creepy in itself but the flow of the game with the scares happening so naturally and seamlessly just added to the experience. I could go on and on about this game but I’ll just let you play it instead.

Horror Games are fun to play and to build.

Since I loved horror games so much I decided to make my own. While it may not be up to these standards it is definitely going to be fun. I have a demo out if you want to give it a try check out

The Deadly Maze

Definitely good games to try out with Halloween right around the corner! I haven’t played Quake since the original, but I can see why you would put it on your list. My sons somehow found Granny on YouTube, let’s just say there was a nightmare or two because of it! I am not familiar with the other games so I am going to have to try them out and see how I like them. Thank you for sharing this list!

Quake 4 is definitely worth the time. My 9-year-old son loves Granny and Grandpa. They are both similar and he plays them constantly. Lucky for me he doesn’t get scared easily. If you do try the other games especially the 2 Layers of fear come back and let me know how you liked them.

These are some scary games and I have not played any of them. I think the scariest game I have ever played was silent hills. I have played resident evil but I cannot consider that as scary as silent hills. That is just me anyway and maybe to some people silent hills might not even be scary but to me it really was and to make matters worse I mostly played it at night.

Your description of these games alone got me a scare at a point. I have never played an horror game at all. I am more of a soccer and adventure game guy and trying new kinds of game would make sense. Of all the games you have listed here, i love the way you described Layer of fear. The game coming up as number one and two on the list explains how horrific it can be.i look forward to playing it.

Okay, so I am not a big fan of horror games but someone told me that they are really cool and they have the most amount of suspense so I am willing to give it a try. You have listed just enough for me to choose from and the story line of these games are really nice to see. Is the granny game available for PC? And when is your game going to be available

    Hello,

All of the five games seem to be filled with great grafics and best suited for the title horror games. I personally like puzzle games. So I think I would like to try The subject, Layers of fear 1 and 2. For a beginner to horror games what would you suggest as the best from above three games? A horror game is all about that heart stopping moments and creepy characters. So I wish you much success with your game The Deadly Maze.

If you like puzzles then I would suggest The Subject. It has some really complex puzzles. As for heart-stopping moments the first Layers of Fear would be my pick for best scares and characters.
